I just love Magnolia Cafe. It is mostly windows so it is bright and
lively
and decorated with gift items for sale. They are so whimsical it gives
you
a great feeling. Magnolia Cafe is owner run and has the freshest of
everything to offer. They are also a bakery and you can pick up
wonderful
baked goods there. They serve breakfast and lunch. I eat there a lot and
everything is superb. The service is friendly and fast and its a
wonderful
stop for the day. Plan to sit back and really enjoy yourself. It is very
popular with the locals so plan for it to be busy at lunch time. Early
and
late lunch offer the most relaxation.

We have yet another new restaurant in Beaufort called Bricks on
Boundary.
It sits on Boundary St almost directly across from the National
Cememtary.
It was renovated this year and has a great fun atmosphere. They offer a
nightly Happy Hour with well drinks at $3.50 Now that's a great deal. I
had the meatball sub which was a special for the day and my husband had
a
Ceasar salad. It was a lot of fun. The service is excellent. I recommend
Bricks for your next trip to Beauftiful Beaufort.

This is one of the restaurants in Beaufort that has a spectacular view
of
the river and bridge. It sits in a marina with outside seating
overlooking
the boats. Most days in Beaufort are warm enough to sit outside and dine
casually. We went on my birthday for a liesurely lunch. We enjoyed tuna
salad sandwich, fried shrimp basket with huge onion rings and a cup of
chile
with half BLT sandwich. We enjoyed it so much. Don't miss this stop when
you are in Beaufort or just passing through.

I am going to be In Surf side Beach, SC at the end of June next year and
I
want to see a few areas I've been interested in. First I want to visit
Charleston and would like to know how easy it is to travel by car from
where
I'm staying and how many hours ride. And I also want to visit Kiawah
Island,
have always wanted to stay there, but would like to visit while I'm
close
by. How far is it from where I'm staying? Is there a particular spot
that
I will catch the Mustangs running free on the beach. I'm coming with the
camera and would love to get some memorable photos. Thanx

Now open, The Blue Crab restaurant and bar is located where Matter of Taste
was, Newcastle Square 1001 Boundary St. They are open 7 days a week
11:00AM to 10:00PM. We went for lunch around 12:30 and the restaurant was
full which is always a good sign. The new owners have kept the white
tablecloth ambiance which keeps it similar to Matter of Taste. I love that
feeling for lunch. You are being treated specially. The full menu is
available for lunch and dinner and we decided to try two of their signature
entrees. I love scallops so I had the grilled scallop plate and it was
excellent. For $18 it comes with a house salad and two side dishes. I
opted for the asparagus and tomatoes and sautéed green beans. My companions
had the 12 oz rib eye at $19 and the other Caesar Salad for $8. The menu
offers starters such as bacon wrapped scallops, buffalo style fried shrimp
or oysters $7 to $8. Their soups included lobster bisque and shrimp and
roasted corn bisque. They offer salads, sandwiches and specialty dishes.
As the name suggests there is an emphasis on the seafood side. Come on down
and welcome the new owners!

There is a great new hotel in town and inside there is a great new
Italian restaurant. The Holiday Inn and the restaurant overlook the
beautiful marshes of Beaufort. The fine dining room is beautifully
decorated offering white tablecloth service and large windows
overlooking the marsh. Two of the booths offer TV's for special events
some diners may not wish to miss. The menu is extensive and also offers
specials of the evening. I adore Italian food and we can't seem to keep
an Italian restaurant in Beaufort. Our party ordered the three cheese
onion soup, Penne Rustica (in the Tuscan style), mushroom ravioli
alforno and penne Bolognese. It was all superb. Entrees were served
piping hot in huge white bowls. Some may say its pricey, as it is but I
got three complete meals out of my one entree for $17. It is of course
fine dining so I feel the prices are reasonable for the expectations.
The wine list is good and the service was so attentive and excellent.
Thanks to and ask for Rea. Top off your meal with the Tiramisu and roll
your belly home. We were told that there are beautiful one bedroom
suites overlooking the marsh for a very reasonable (seasonal) rate for
Beaufort. I highly recommend this restaurant especially if you are a
lover of authentic Italian food such as I am. The entrees run from
Flatbreads for $9 to lamb chops and NY Strip for $22. They serve
breakfast, lunch and dinner and the lounge right next door offers happy
hour and tables on a deck overlooking the marsh. Mark this down as a
must do when you visit our lovely town. One side note: This hotel is a
little difficult to find because it sits back on the marsh away from the
Street. It is located at 2225 Boundary St in between the Econo lodge and
the Chinese Restaurant near Caffino's.

Silvi's European cafe located at 1430 Ribaut Road. This is a family
operated restaurant providing 6 years previously as a pastry chef in
Washington DC. "Pastry chef extraordinaire, Silvi prepares all of the
wonderful pastries and desserts served at Silvi's (and cookies and other
confections "to go") from scratch each morning." These pastries are
divine and Chef Lutz Kuhn uses them in wonderful ways. The lunch menu is
mostly German. The atmosphere is warm and relaxing. White tablecloths
and
European flair accent the dining rooms. Each meal is prepared to order
so you're invited to relax with a glass of wine or beer and enjoy some
pleasant company. Our waitress Ginger was so professional and pleasant.
I chose the Strudel Sampler which included one strudel filled with
sauerkraut, smoked pork and swiss cheese and another filled with baby
spinach, onions and feta cheese served with a garnish of salad for
$10.00. My companion ordered the Black Forest Rueben which was made up
of ham, swiss, sauerkraut served on a bavarian roll with warm German
potato salads for $8.00. We enjoyed our wine and had the very popular
Swedish Almond Tart for dessert. It was a very nice long lunch and I
cannot wait to go back for dinner. I have been told the dinner menu is
more extensive including Filet and more. Lunch is served
11:00 to 2:30 and dinner is 5 to 9. Plan this into your trip to Beaufort
and prepare to enjoy a long leisurely European dining experience.

We have a new Thai restaurant here in Beaufort and everyone is talking
about it. Yes, Thai Indeed. It is on Boundary St in a non-descript
little building set back from the road. It does not inviting but once
you walk through the door and see the charming white cloth interior and
smell the flavors from the kitchen you are automatically rest assured
that it is going to be great. The menu is quite large with prices
ranging from 3.95 to 9.95. Lunch is served Monday through Friday and
dinner only on Sat. and Sun. They offer appetizers, salads, soup, noodle
bowls and fried rice curries and much much more. I selected Chef Sanits
selection of CHOA-LAY. It was a sautéed combination of seafood with
shrimp, green mussels, calamari and sea scallops with fresh chili
pepper, garlic in Thai creamy basil sauce. It was very good. The service
was efficient and friendly. I will definitely be
going back.

We have new complex in Beaufort on Boundary Street called Town Center.
It is comprised of various buildings housing some wonderful places to
eat, shop and stay. One Town Center has a Mo's, Rita's and various other
businesses. That is located directly across from the Government Center.
To the right of that a hotel was totally renovated and this houses The
Inn at Town Center who boasts the largest and deepest outdoor pool in
Beaufort. Rates begin at $81 and range to $119. They are a little higher
during marine graduation. The staff is friendly. Everything is brand new
so check it next time you need a place to stay or put up family. In that
building there is also the Visitor's Center and then The wonderful
Starving Artist Cafe. Open seven days a week 6-3 this little cafe has a
very nice menu. All the deli meats are cooked on the premises. How great
is that! Their breakfast items include Eggs Benedict, Corned Beef Hash,
and remember that corned beef is fresh cooked. The Omelets sound
delicious with the Irish Omelet calling my name. I went at lunch time
(although you can get breakfast items all day long. The prices are very
reasonable. They offer Beef Veggie Soup, salads, wraps deli sandwiches,
Burgers including Shrimp, and then a host of
signature sandwiches with my personal favorite Plymouth Rockwhich is
turkey, bacon, and cranberry sauce w/mayo on pumpernickel. You have to
be tempted by Tuscan chicken or the pastrami special. I love it all and
will be going back till I try everything. They offer fresh baked rolls,
buns, muffins, pies, cakes and cookies. They offer take out and delivery
for lunch. It's a great little place. The restaurants has artwork for
sale all over its walls. Much of it I believe is local. They even have
jewelry. I love this place and the friendly people so put this on your
must do list for both breakfast and lunch.

There is a new restaurant on St. Helena Island named Boondocks. It
really isn't that new, maybe a year but we just got a chance to try it
this January, 2008. We were meeting friends for dinner and it is a
central location for us. Boondocks is located in what I assume to be an
old home. I know several restaurants have been there over my years in
Beaufort. The restaurant is bright and cozy with the entire front of the
dining room windows overlooking huge live oak trees. The service was so
friendly and efficient we were truly impressed. At times we had three
people checking on
us. When we entered a good friend told us the local she crab soup was
excellent. The menu was large with great offerings making it hard to
choose. I opted to follow the recommendation of a friend and ordered the
she crab soup and crab cake sandwich. I give enormous credit to this
staff because the soup came out steaming hot. Usually soups in
restaurants are luke warm at the best and I like them hot. It was thick
and satisfying and a good recommendation. The crab sandwich was
excellent and much more than I could eat. My husband ordered ribs which
came out piled to the sky. Our friends ordered fried shrimp and prime
rib. Everything was excellent. Freshly cooked, hot, not greasy just
perfect in every way. Great job
Boondocks. We'll be back.

There is a brewery in Beaufort as of December 2007 located in the new
Town Center (K-mart/Outback). Ironically, it is named Brewer's Brewing
Company owned by none other than Josh D Brewer. Josh is also the brewer.
It is set on the side of the building towards Bi-Lo. The restaurant is
bright and inviting with the friendliest service you will find anywhere.
It serves lunch and dinner opening at 11:00 AM. Brewer's offers a huge
menu with something for everyone including a great kid's menu. We
decided to give
Brewer's a try in December after traveling a couple weekend and all the
holiday food so we wanted to test out their light side of the menu. My
husband started with Spiedies In a Blanket. Described as an upstate NY
favorite it consisted of marinated beef wrapped in phyllo, baked and
served with dipping sauce. It was unusual and quite good. He then had a
great Caesar salad. I had to choose between some wonderful sounding
options shrimp ceviche, shrimp & scallop skewers or Artichoke & Red
Pepper Bruschetta. I opted to try their onion soup and bruschetta. Both
were good. Unfairly for Brewers one of our trips was to Colorado where
we tested three different breweries. We would usually try a sample tray
of the beers but opted for one glass of ale and a wine. This is a place
you can return to again and again because the menu is so eclectic and
huge. I already have several things in mind for my next trip back.
Welcome to Beautiful Beaufort Josh. Job well done.

I need to order a cake for the graduation party for my son. He'll be
graduating from Parris Island Marine Recruit Deport near Beaufort on March
9, 2007. I'd like your recommendations for where/who nearby I can order
such a cake. Ideally, I'd like to have a cake with the USMC emblem on top.
We are from Michigan and flying out to join up with other family and I
want to get this cake ordered and off my list. I'd appreciate any
suggestions.

My friend and I spent a lovely day this June touring gardens of the
Beaufort Garden Club Members. I bought a great book on what to plant and
tend to by the month of the year in a Lowcountry garden. The members said
they hold this tour each June. One garden is featured a day. It is free
and so well worth the time. This particular garden was in the gorgeous
historic Point area of Beaufort just a short walk from downtown. It was
such a beautiful peaceful garden and all the viewers seemed to maintain a
calm reverance of its peaceful plan. It was a scorching hot day but the
mostly shade garden cooled us and our senses. The members offered free
lemondade and cookies and were very helpful in identifying certain plant
varieties. I very much recommend looking for the dates of next year's
Garden Club tours. It was a very nice way to spend a summer morning.

We want to welcome the Lowcountry Winery and tasting room to Bay St. The
proprietor Amy Burch is a breath of fresh air oozing southern charm. The
tasting room offers wines made from ingredients from all over South
Carolina. The tastings include dry wines with no risidual sugar like
Merlot, Chardonnay and Elderberry. This was my first elderberry
experience. The demi-sec wines with 1 to 2% residual sugar are Chardonnay,
Pinot Grigio and the Proprietor's Red. Medium wines with 3 to 5% residual
sugar include Lowcountry Nectar, Elderberry, Bay Street Berry and
Framboise. Lastly but most popular with some are the sweet wines with 6 to
10 % residual sugar are Lowcountry Nectar, Elderberry, Bay Street Berry,
and Framboise. All of their wines are for sale for $16.99. The label on
the bottles is gorgeous. My friend and I tasted most of the wines. We both
bought a bottle of the Demi-sec chardonnay and I bought a logo wine glass
for only $2.00 What a deal! This is a pleasant place to visit and a nice
respite while strolling Bay Street. We want to welcome Amy and her husband
to town and wish them great success with this endeavor. We sure had a
great time.

The new hot spot for a great lunch is the Four Winds Market at 709 Bay St.
The Bay St entrance takes you through an eclectic gallery of art and
scupture. As we entered we were cordially greeted by the owner, Tom Davis
and guided to the Market in the back of the gallery. The lunch fare menu
for eat in or take out is wonderfully fresh and creative with a definite
Mediterranean flare. It was difficult to decide which enticing sounding
dish to try. We had paninis on our mind and the girl behind the counter
suggested the roast beef and horseradish. We were happy with that
suggestion and were offered our choice of side from Marinated Cauliflower,
Couscous Salad, or Tabouli. I selected couscous and my friend had the
cauliflower. We sat at a side bar and talked away. We were asked how
everything was several times and the owner was very pleasant. We ended our
lunch with hazelnut and pistachio gelato. It was the perfect ending to a
very perfect lunch. The menu offers other salads like Thai Beef, Sesame
Chicken and Quinoa. A platter of three kinds can be selected. Paninis like
Spicy Moroccan Beef and Pesto Chicken are available and wraps of hummus,
Thai Beef or Tuna. I highly recommend the Four Winds Market. It is a great
option for picnic food for the boat, park or beach. This is a must do in
Beaufort.

Blue Crab on Boundary Street is a must go to restaurant for lunch.
It it beautifuly decorated, the service is superb, and the food was
excellent and inexpensive for the luxurious treatment you receive. White
table clothes and large windows accentuate a special lunch whether for an
occassion or just for yourself. I highly recommend it.

On March 3, 2006 we attented the Tribute to the Great Chefs of the South.
Five chefs paired with five up-scale restaurants in Beaufort to present a
night to remember. We choose Bateaux restaurant because we love it so
much. We have been going to this restaurant for ten years back when it was
Whitehall Plantation and fall more deeply in love with it each time we go.
It has the most spectacular view in Beaufort. Chef Shaun Doty of Table
1280 in Atlanta came to Bateaux to dazzle us. Wine pairings were selected
by Rick Caudle of Wildman Imports. The evening began as we entered through
the trellis and saw a champagne table in front of the sunset over the
river. Incredible. We mingled outside sipping a lovely light champagne
paired with passed appetizers. The Foie Gras praline with pumperknickle
crumbs was to die for and went so well with the champagne. We then sat in
the lovely dining room where not one table has a bad view. Our name was
written on a plate in the centerpiece and we felt this evening was planned
just for us. The first course was yellow fin tuna with spicy coconut
noodles and the second course was grilled pompano with red pepper compote.
We do not like fish at all so this was a little disappointing, but the
wines a Gewurtztrminer and a Bourgogne Rouge were wonderful. We did think
it odd that they would serve two fish courses rather than a soup or salad.
Dinner was Painted Hills Beef Filet with a potato leek galette paired with
a Malbec. It was lovely--just like butter, baby!! Dessert was no
disappointment and we very much enjoyed the pineapple up-side down cake
with coconut ice cream paired with a lovely muscat. It was a very special
evening and begins the spring celebrations in the south. On March 4 Great
Chefs continues with wine and food tastings, iron chef competitions and
much more. Plan ahead to visit Beaufort next year for A Tribute to Great
Chefs of the south. It is an experience you will remember for a long time.

Wine & Gourmet is a lovely shop right downtown. It is within walking
distance of many Historic attractions as well as eceletic little shops. On
Friday morning I popped in because I had not been there since the new
ownership. I walked around for a little while just casually browsing and
taking stock of the provisions available when I hit the cheese counter.
Now a great idea came to me. Why not bring home some cheeses we had never
tried before and pair them with some wine for a long liesurely Friday
night dinner. Theresa was behind the counter and excited to help me with
my selections. Manchego was the only one I was familar with so she offered
little tastings. We both had fun tasting and selecting the cheeses I would
bring home. Michelle came over and helped me pair my cheese platter with
some good wines. I was looking for a white Riojo, but they were out of it
so Michelle selected another spanish white she thought would be terrific.
My husband loves Shiraz so once again she gave me direction and lastly we
settled on a nice Pinot Noir. Her wine selections were both wonderful and
affordable.
I selected seven cheeses to try. One, my absolute favorite, Cotswold was
from England and Parrana a dutch cheese very much in the parmesian style.
The rest were Spanish a Petit Basque which was lovely, a Camp De Mantalban
from the La Mancha area of Spain. We added breads and hard meats and had a
tasting fiesta.
Even if you know nothing about cheese this is the perfect place to begin
your learning process. Theresa said she decided to try the cheese platter
with her daughter and it was a big hit. Theresa, Michelle and the owner
Annie are more than happy to help you select incredible lunches, picnic,
or romantic dinner supplies. It is also fun to have wine and cheese
pairing parties with friends. Whether you live in Beaufort or are just
visiting make it a point to visit and enjoy the world of Wine & Gourmet!!
I'll be back there soon for sure.

Yesterday I spent the most pleasant afternoon in an eclectic art gallery
on St Helena Island. The owners Mary Mack and Fran Sobieski were so
charming and obviously in love with what they do. This gallery contains
one of the South's most important collections of Folk Art offering Gullah,
regional, outsider and fine art, in addition to quilts, art prints,
handcrafted jewelry, books, gifts, and crafts by Sea Island artisans. It
is like a museum gallery. I wanted to buy everything but honed in on two
prints. One by Lil Simpson in 2003 and the other by Diane Britton Dunham
in 95. I just love them. Folk art is very sought after in today's
collectible markets. You have to visit, whether you are a local like me
who just never had the time to stop in or you are visiting our beautiful
Sea Islands. They also offer events featuring their artists. They are
having a lovely Gullah Christmas Tea with local gulla author's in Dec. 05
as well as a Live Nativity. This is not just a gallery. It is an adventure
in culture. Check out their schedule www.RedPianotoo.com and take the time
to visit. You won't be sorry!
